One Of Scripture's Darkest Narratives
Judges 19 to 21 happens to be one of Scripture's darkest narratives. A Levite and his concubine spend the night in the home of a Benjamite, and the woman is eventually given to violent men who rape her to death. What follows only deepens the tragedy, with sixty-five thousand men dying in battles of revenge.
You can never make sense of the happenings until you remember the constant refrain in Judges: in those days Israel had no king, everyone did as he saw fit.
The Need For A King
Only a righteous, just, and merciful king can maintain order and save a nation. Israel tried to get justice for the defiling and death of an innocent woman, but their efforts ended in more tears, death, and regrets.
