When The Chains Must Fall Off

A meditation on Acts 12:7 and the sovereign wisdom of God, who decides whether a servant's chains fall off or a servant's life is complete.

As long as there is still work for me, I know beyond any doubt that all chains, however strong, will always fall off.

Acts 12:7

Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. “Quick, get up!” he said, and the chains fell off Peter’s wrists.

Chains Off, Head Off

Think about John the Baptist. Possibly the same prison, servant of the same God and indeed the greatest of those born of women according to Jesus' own testimony. One, the chains fell off. The other, the head fell off.

Why? Because God, whom both men were serving, is sovereign. When one man's work is complete, He allows the head to be severed. When another one's work is not complete, the chains must fall off.

I Am All Yours

What do we say in view of this? I am all yours, Lord. You created me for a purpose and You never consulted me when You did so.

When my work gets completed, do with me as You wish. But as long as there is still work for me, I know beyond any doubt that all chains however strong will always fall off. I am all yours.
