Jesus went beyond Moses back to the beginning and declared that the two, not three, will become one flesh.
For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. So they are no longer two, but one flesh.
A Live Debate
The debate about one man and one wife or more wives is very much alive. Some argue that Christian men should marry several women so that all women are taken care of and single motherhood is reduced. Others blame missionary influence for introducing monogamy as though it were merely a foreign cultural layer.
But the grapevine theory about there being more women than men is not supported by statistics. At the age when people normally get married, there are actually slightly more men than women.

Our focus text is part of Jesus' answer to the marriage and divorce question. In answering, Jesus goes beyond the law of Moses to the beginning and declares that the two, not three, will become one.
So, all those who argue that godly men under the Mosaic law married several wives and got away with it should remember Jesus' explanation: it was because their hearts were hardened. God's original and eternal plan was one husband, one wife. And He has ensured the numbers support this.
