Neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who makes things grow.
What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe. I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow.
Only Servants
Sometimes I find it baffling when I see Christians literally deifying and near-worshipping their spiritual leaders. There is an interesting buzz in social media concerning a comedian who has mimicked a so-called mighty prophet, and his followers are promising earthly and celestial hell for the young lady unless she repents and pulls down her video.
I believe leaders of all cadres should be respected. However, that respect should be earned. Church leaders in the New Testament dispensation especially earn their respect through their example. Theirs is moral authority.
What Has Actually Grown?
Paul in this text tells the Corinthians not to make a very big deal of him, Apollos, or any other minister, for neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who makes things grow.
What things have the so-called mighty whatnot made to grow? I keep wondering.
