God's face may not always shine around our suffering, but it shines into it with a nearness that becomes enough.
Restore us, O God Almighty; make Your face shine upon us, that we may be saved.
When His Face Shines
There are days when the world feels dim, when prayers seem to echo back without answer, and when hardship presses heavier than our strength. Israel in Psalm 80 was in that place, so they prayed not first for changed circumstances, but for God's face to shine upon them again.
Because when God's face shines, darkness does not disappear immediately, but it cannot win.
Stephen And Paul
Stephen's martyrdom can be described as light in the middle of stones. Heaven did not open to rescue him from the stones. It opened to show him Jesus, and that was enough.
Paul's case was strength in the middle of weakness. He was beaten, imprisoned, rejected, and misunderstood, yet he testified that the Lord stood by him and strengthened him. That is God's shining face: not always changing the path, but lighting it with His presence.
A Prayer
The shining of His face is the warmth the heart feels when Scripture opens with fresh meaning, the quiet peace that settles in the middle of worry, and the unexpected strength to forgive, endure, or hope again.
Lord, shine Your face upon me today. Not by removing every hardship, but by filling my heart with Your nearness. Let Your presence be my peace, Your favour my strength, and Your grace my light. Turn Your face toward me, and let that be enough. Amen.
